    Services: From Policy to Practice

    Trade Forum takes up the issue of trade in services once more, which we covered in detail earlier last year (see Why Services Matter).

    In the stories below, we move from policy to practice in promoting service exports. Pascal Lamy, head of the World Trade Organization, explains the importance of opening service markets to boost countries' development.

    Trade in services was also the focus of ITC's annual debate on national export strategy, the Executive Forum, in October 2005.

    During the debate, business and government leaders from developing countries looked at best-practice business cases of service exporting. We've highlighted three cases from service providers in Botswana, Malaysia and Uganda. Whether it's building trust among potential clients, working with governments to develop their markets or competing with more experienced service providers, these cases illustrate some of the main challenges of selling services abroad and lessons from firms that are doing it successfully.

    We also bring you tips from Austrade, which is helping service firms to overcome trade barriers.
