Show of Support for Least Developed Countries

International Trade Forum - Issue 2/2009

On 16 July, a memorandum of understanding was signed for the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF), showing a firm interna-tional commitment to ensuring that least developed countries (LDCs) benefit from trade.

The accord was signed by ITC and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), two of the key implementing agencies, and by the United Nations Office for Project Services, the EIF's newly appointed Trust Fund Manager.

It will help LDCs strengthen their capacity to develop exports that can compete in global markets. It builds on an existing trade assistance mechanism, the Integrated Framework, which began in 1997 and in which ITC has been deeply involved.

The first two projects, which target skills and project design capacity building, have already been approved for Yemen and Sierra Leone.
