- Issue 1/2001
To say that the face of international business is changing is an
understatement. There are new rules of the game, new technologies,
new business practices, new competitive pressures and new
commercial opportunities. With the pace of change likely to
accelerate, policy makers in the public and private sectors are
re-examining their approaches to trade promotion.
With this in mind, ITC organized its first Executive Forum on
National Export Strategies in Annecy, France from 26-29 September
1999. The theme was "Redefining Trade Promotion - the Need for a
Strategic Response". The event allowed senior decision-makers from
government and industry to analyze export development issues,
exchange views and experiences and explore possible courses of
future action. Discussions were facilitated by resource persons
from international organizations, trade support institutions and
universities.
The event reviewed trends in electronic commerce, global supply
management, trade and investment linkages and networking between
public and private trade-related institutions. The meeting
highlighted national export strategies and lessons to be learned
from the recent experiences of Chile, Finland, Ireland, New
Zealand, Mauritius and the Philippines.
The next issue of Forum will contain meeting highlights. See
also the Executive Forum web site
(http://www.intracen.org/execforum). It contains the programme,
along with meeting highlights, extracts from technical papers and
background materials.
